Zigbee works as a system around a hub rather than as single devices. Zigbee is still maintained. Zigbee 4.0 was announced in November 2025 and is backward compatible with Zigbee 3.0, and a Zigbee hub that bridges to Matter keeps those devices usable in every major Matter platform. Zigbee sits behind 580 of the 3243 devices in this index, and makers now sell Thread versions alongside it.[1–4]

Zigbee development status
Zigbee is a Connectivity Standards Alliance standard, from the same body that publishes Matter. The CSA describes it as a self-healing mesh that eliminates single points of failure with minimal power consumption and scales to thousands of nodes. It says over a billion Zigbee devices are already deployed worldwide.[5]
On 18 November 2025 the CSA announced Zigbee 4.0 and Suzi. Zigbee 4.0 brings security updates aligned with international security standards, plus batch commissioning, which sets up several devices at once. It is fully backward compatible with Zigbee 3.0 and Smart Energy, so existing devices keep working. Suzi is the new name for Zigbee's sub-GHz option. It adds 800 MHz PHYs for Europe and 900 MHz PHYs for North America beyond the usual 2.4 GHz band.[1]
Zigbee 4.0 is backward compatible with Zigbee 3.0, so existing sensors, bulbs and switches keep working with newer coordinators.[1]
What a Zigbee network needs
A coordinator is required. Home Assistant defines a Zigbee network as a mesh of devices with low-power digital radios using a low-bandwidth protocol, and every network forms around one coordinator. That is a hardware radio adapter, typically a USB dongle on the machine running Home Assistant, or the radio inside a vendor hub. A Zigbee network cannot form without one. That is why Zigbee always needs a hub of some kind.[6]
Mains-powered devices such as wall plugs and bulbs act as Zigbee routers automatically and extend the mesh. Battery sensors sleep and report through them. So a few plugs or bulbs spread around a home usually give better Zigbee coverage than sensors alone.[6]
Zigbee and Matter
Zigbee reaches Matter through a bridge. Zigbee devices do not speak Matter themselves. A bridge is a hub that keeps the Zigbee network and exposes its devices to Matter controllers. Home Assistant notes that a bridge keeps the devices available in the vendor's own app while the devices also appear in Home Assistant.[7]
Philips Hue and Aqara both take this route. Philips Hue says its Bridge has been updated to support Matter, so Hue lights and accessories automatically support Matter too. Its Matter-enabled bulbs can also run over Thread with a Thread border router. Aqara's Advanced Matter Bridging was first introduced with the Hub M3. It carries Aqara features such as power-based automations to third-party Matter platforms. Aqara lists it for the Hub M3, Hub M100 and Camera Hub G5 Pro, as well as older bridges such as the Hub M2 and Hub E1.[2][3]
The table compares three ways such devices can reach a Matter platform: directly over Thread, through a bridge, or as plain Zigbee into a hub that has its own Zigbee radio.[6][7]
Zigbee next to the Matter paths
How facts are sourced: every cell cites its source below| Path | What it needs | Local control | Devices listing it, hubs included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zigbee | Zigbee coordinator[5][6] (Home Assistant ZHA requires a Zigbee coordinator adapter.) | Yes[6] (ZHA is a local Zigbee gateway implementation.) | 580 |
| Matter through a bridge | Matter controller, Vendor bridge[7][8] (Devices behind a bridge, such as a Hue bridge, appear in Matter controllers through that bridge.) | Varies[7] (The controller-to-bridge leg is local. The bridge-to-device leg depends on the vendor.) | 419 |
| Matter over Thread | Matter controller, Thread border router[7][9] (A Thread network requires a border router to connect to other networks. Home Assistant requires one to commission Thread Matter devices.) | Yes[7][9] | 180 |
Devices that are Zigbee coordinators
70 devices in the index are Zigbee coordinators. The table lists them by maker, with their Thread border router and Matter controller roles beside them. A hub with all three roles covers Zigbee, Thread and Matter from one box.[6]

Known Zigbee limits
- Cross-brand mixing: Home Assistant warns that some Zigbee devices are not fully compatible with all brands of Zigbee routers, and that not all manufacturers fully comply with the standard. A sensor that drops off may be routing through another brand's bulb.[6]
- Wi-Fi overlap: Zigbee and Wi-Fi share frequency ranges, so channel choice matters. Home Assistant also advises a long USB extension cable, placing the coordinator away from interference, and using a USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.x.[6]
- One radio, one protocol: the Connect ZBT-2 is dedicated to either Zigbee or Thread and cannot do both at once. Nabu Casa does not consider multiprotocol suitable for the home and recommends a separate adapter for each protocol.[45]
- Vendor hubs: a brand's Zigbee hub is built around that brand's devices. An open coordinator with Home Assistant, or a multi-protocol hub such as the Homey Pro with its Zigbee 3.0 radio, takes devices from many makers. The compatibility caveat above still applies.[6][100]
Where Zigbee and Thread fit
- Hue or Aqara Zigbee: the bridges expose those devices to Matter, so those devices are not tied to one platform.[2][3]
- Home Assistant: a dedicated Zigbee coordinator connects Zigbee devices from many makers directly. Home Assistant recommends the Connect ZBT-2 for new networks.[6]
- HomeKit and Google Home: Matter over Thread devices need a border router, which many homes already have. They do not need a brand's Zigbee hub.[2][44]
- Devices sold in both versions: the Thread version needs a Thread border router and the Zigbee version needs a Zigbee hub. Aqara announced a Thread-based lineup in January 2022.[4][44]
- Hubs sold today: some are a Zigbee coordinator, a Thread border router and a Matter controller in one. The Homey Pro has Zigbee 3.0 and a Thread border router in one box.[100]
