About Smart Home Canon
Smart home gear, with a source for every fact
Smart Home Canon is an independent reference database of current and upcoming smart home devices. Filter by connection type, platform or brand to find products, compare lines across makers, and see what works with HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home and Matter and what extra hardware each needs. Every fact carries a source and a check date. The catalog currently holds 3243 devices from 98 brands, 275 product lines and 11 platforms, and it is still growing.
What it is
One product name often covers several different models, and what a device works with depends on how it connects: Matter over Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi or a maker's cloud. This site lists devices, the connections they support, the platforms they work with and the lineups behind similar names. Each table cell links to the page it came from. It also lists upcoming devices and release news.
It is built for planning a smart home: narrow the catalog by the parameters you care about, compare makers, and check what each device needs to work.
Pages say when a device needs the maker's cloud or a bridge. Where no source answers, the page says unknown.
What it covers
Smart home devices sold in the United States, across lighting, sensors, locks, cameras, thermostats, plugs, hubs, speakers and networking. Pages are organised by brand, product line, category, platform and connection path. The news section reports announcements from makers and platforms, and the guides explain standards and hardware requirements.
Who writes it
The site writes its own entries. It has no guest authors, reviewer personas or sponsored write-ups. Each page shows when its sources were last checked. The change log records what was added or corrected, and is also available as an RSS feed.
How facts are sourced
Each fact cites a public page, usually the maker's own, and the date it was last read. A fact with no source shows as unknown. The methodology sets out what counts as a source, how a model's status is decided, how images are chosen and credited, and how corrections are made.
Corrections and contact
An error that is reported is checked against its source and fixed, and the fix is recorded in the change log. See the corrections policy.
What this site does not do
The site gives no scores or star ratings, shows no retailer prices and sells nothing, though some pages link to the maker's page and to an Amazon search (see the disclosure). It has no accounts and no comments (see the privacy page).
