What is DIY firmware?

A device running open firmware such as ESPHome or Tasmota. It is controlled locally over the Home Assistant API, MQTT or Matter.[1][2]

What DIY firmware means

Some devices can be flashed with open firmware that replaces the maker's. ESPHome builds firmware from a YAML description for ESP32, ESP8266, RP2040 and several other chips and connects to Home Assistant locally. Tasmota runs on ESP8266 and ESP32. It is controlled over MQTT, HTTP or its web UI, and on ESP32 it can be a Matter over Wi-Fi device.[1–3]

Required hardware

A device whose chip the firmware supports, and a way to flash it the first time, often over a serial connection. After that, ESPHome and Tasmota devices can update over the air.[1][2][4]

About these columns
Requires
Hardware the path needs beyond the device and a controller.
Local
Yes when control on this path keeps working with the internet down.

Reading the path badges

A badge names the path, and a short code after it names the hardware the path needs. For example Matter / Thread, needs BR marks a Matter over Thread device that needs a Thread border router.
