Tasmota is open-source firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 devices. It gives local control over MQTT, HTTP and a web UI, and on ESP32 it can be a Matter over Wi-Fi device. It does not support Thread, and its Zigbee gateway needs an attached Zigbee chip.[1–3]

What Tasmota supports
How facts are sourced: every cell cites its source below| Capability | Supported | Since |
|---|---|---|
| MQTT (local) | Yes[1] (Control via MQTT, Web UI, HTTP or serial.) | unknown |
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Yes[2] (Since Tasmota 13.0.0, ESP32 only. Matter over IP as an end device, not Matter certified.) | v13.0[2] (Supported since July 2023 by Tasmota v13.0 and above. End device over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, not on ESP8266.) |
| Matter over Thread | No[2] (Thread is not supported. It requires a specific radio that ESP32 devices lack.) | unknown |
| Zigbee | Yes[3] (Zigbee gateway (Zigbee2Tasmota) on supported MCUs or an attached coordinator.) | unknown |
| Wi-Fi with local control | Yes[1] (Local control over MQTT, the web UI, HTTP or serial.) | unknown |
| Matter through a bridge | Yes[2] (An ESP32 running Tasmota can bridge other Tasmota devices over HTTP or MQTT, and some Zigbee2Tasmota devices in a self-compiled build, to Matter.) | unknown |
What it is
Flashed onto a plug, relay or bulb, Tasmota replaces the maker's firmware. It is controlled over MQTT, its own web UI, HTTP or serial, with no hub or cloud account required. Both MQTT 3.1.1 and MQTT 5 are supported, so any MQTT broker on the network can sit between Tasmota and the automation software.[1]
Some features do not fit in the precompiled release binaries because of flash size limits and need a self-compiled build. Berry scripting runs on ESP32 builds only.[1][4]
Which paths it supports
Since version 13.0.0, Tasmota on ESP32 speaks Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet as an end device, so a Matter controller can commission it without a Tasmota-specific integration. An ESP32 can also bridge ESP8266 Tasmota devices to Matter, and in a self-compiled build some Zigbee devices. Thread is not supported because it needs a separate radio.[2]
Zigbee2Tasmota turns an ESP8266 or ESP32 into a Zigbee coordinator through a serial-attached Zigbee chip. The chip is either a Texas Instruments CC253x, CC26x2 or CC13x2 running Z-Stack, or a Silicon Labs EFR32MG12 or MG21 running EZSP. The docs recommend ESP32-based gateways.[3]
Local or cloud
Control is local over MQTT, HTTP and the web UI, and Tasmota states that Matter communication is completely local.[1][2]
