HomeKit requirements and features
Apple describes both HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K as home hubs.[2][3]
Home Collection does not require HomeView. Apple says some features need a compatible home hub and names HomeView, HomePod and Apple TV.[4]
Pairing is a tap on an iPhone running the latest software, using NFC. Apple says everything is managed in the Home app.[4]
HomeView also works with other HomeKit- or Matter-enabled accessories. Apple says it can show up to nine camera feeds at once and recognizes up to six people by face.[1]
The cameras use HomeKit Secure Video, which needs an iCloud+ plan. A plan stores 10 days of event video and covers one, five or an unlimited number of cameras. Apple Intelligence video summaries and natural-language search need an eligible plan and an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad.[4][5]
HomePod mini 2 supports Sound Recognition, which listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. It requires the updated Home architecture, which Apple ships as a separate update in the Home app. Apple says it should not be relied on in emergencies.[2]
Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS. Apple does not sell HomeView in the EU for that reason.[1][4]
Matter and Thread
Apple says the Home Collection deadbolt, both thermostats and both sensors are Matter compatible. The lock also supports Aliro and keeps its core access functions working locally without internet.[4]
Apple says every Home Collection device supports Thread, so it can stay connected if Wi-Fi drops. The devices update their network credentials on their own when the home Wi-Fi changes.[4]
The cameras also record to built-in storage during a Wi-Fi outage.[4]
Apple TV 4K (4th generation) has built-in Wi-Fi and Thread.[3]
Not stated by Apple
- Whether HomePod mini 2 or HomeView is a Thread border router. Apple does not call either one a Thread border router and does not list the radios HomeView has.[1][2]
- Whether the Home Collection cameras and doorbell are Matter devices. Apple states Matter for the lock, thermostats and sensors.[4]
- Whether Home Collection works with Google Home, Alexa or Home Assistant. Apple describes setup and control through the Home app only.[4]
- Storage sizes and Ethernet for Apple TV 4K (4th generation). The announcement covers neither.[3]
- When Siri AI reaches HomePod mini 2. Apple says it arrives in a future software update.[2]
