Which UniFi Protect recorders, viewers and AI add-ons should I buy?

UniFi Protect's recorders are the Network Video Recorder Instant, UNVR, UNVR Pro, G2 and G2 Pro and the Enterprise NVRs. Camera count and drive bays separate them. The Instant takes up to 6 4K cameras with one drive bay and a built-in PoE switch. The UNVR takes 18, the UNVR Pro 24, the G2 30 and the G2 Pro 50.

The ENVR and ENVR Core are 3U, 16-bay recorders for 70 and 300 4K cameras. Every recorder here is a UniFi console that runs the Protect application. Home Assistant lists the AI Port as unsupported.

Lines compared

Recorders are separated by camera count first. The Instant is rated for 6 4K cameras, the UNVR for 18, the UNVR Pro for 24, the UNVR G2 for 30, the G2 Pro for 50, the ENVR for 70 and the ENVR Core for 300. The G2's 30 drops to 20 while its HDMI Viewport is in use.[1–7]

The G2 and G2 Pro are 1U and 2U recorders with built-in AI event analytics and HDMI output. The Instant also has an HDMI port for a Viewport display.[1][4][5]

The AI Key and AI Port are separate add-ons. The AI Key adds natural-language search and AI alerts to smart detections. The AI Port adds AI detection and recognition to UniFi and third-party cameras, but it does not support Protect AI series cameras.[8][9]

  • Home Assistant's UniFi Protect integration works with UniFi OS consoles that run Protect and with Protect viewers. It does not support the AI Port.[10]
  • The AI Key handles 1,800 detections per hour.[8][11]

Identify a model

The model is on the label and in UniFi OS.

  • Rack recorders: UNVR (1U, 4 bays), UNVR-Pro (2U, 7 bays), UNVR-G2 (1U, 4 bays), UNVR-G2-Pro (2U, 8 bays), ENVR and ENVR-Core (3U, 16 bays).
  • Compact: UNVR-Instant has one 3.5-inch bay and six PoE ports. The UNVR-Instant-Kit adds four G5 Turret Ultra cameras and a 1 TB drive.
  • Some US SKUs carry a -US suffix, such as UNVR-Instant-US and AI-Key-US.
  • The CloudKey+ SSD is UCK-G2-SSD, the Viewport is UP-Viewport, and the AI Port is UP-AI-Port.
