# Smart sprinkler controllers and hose timers

*How weather-based schedules work, what zones mean, and how in-wall controllers differ from hose timers*

> A smart sprinkler controller runs a schedule for the zone valves of an in-ground system, and a hose timer runs one valve at a faucet. Weather-based controllers use local weather data to decide how much, how often and when to water. Rachio sells the Rachio 3 in-wall controller and the Smart Hose Timer, and Wyze, Meross, Eve, Govee and SONOFF sell controllers, timers or valves of their own in this index.[^1][^2][^3]

## How weather-based sprinkler schedules work

A weather-based controller changes its watering schedule from weather data. The EPA WaterSense program says these controllers use local weather data and landscape conditions to decide how much, how often and when to water. EPA states the aim is to reduce water waste outdoors while keeping landscapes healthy.[^1]

WaterSense labels these controllers after independent certification against EPA criteria for irrigation adequacy, irrigation excess and supplemental features such as accommodating watering restrictions. EPA describes them as either stand-alone units or add-on devices that work with an existing clock-based controller.[^1]

Each maker names its own weather features. Rachio lists Rain Skip for the Rachio 3, which activates after recent heavy rain or when rain is expected, and Seasonal Shift, which adjusts run times by season. It lists Flex Schedules, which update the watering schedule daily or monthly. Heat Wave Boost is a premium feature that recommends adjustments based on the forecast.[^2]

Wyze says its Sprinkler Plus service adds weather data for Smart Schedules and Weather Skips, with one year included at purchase. Wyze also says the controller works with most normally closed rain and soil sensors. The Meross MST200 lists weather-based skipping as well.[^4][^5]

## What a sprinkler zone is

A zone is one group of sprinklers fed by one valve, and a controller counts the zones it can switch. Rachio sells the Rachio 3 in 4-zone, 8-zone, 12-zone and 16-zone versions. The 8-zone model number is 8ZULWC and the 16-zone model number is 16ZULWC.[^2][^6]

The Wyze Sprinkler Controller (model WSPRK1) supports up to 8 zones on 24 V AC and is indoor use only. The Meross MST100 covers 1 zone and the MST200 covers 2 zones, because they attach to a faucet instead of wired valves.[^4][^7][^5]

Wyze states that each of the 8 zones has its own name and photo in the app. The app also starts and stops watering schedules with a tap, and a Wyze Cam can show live footage of a watering.[^4]

## In-wall controllers compared with hose timers

An in-wall controller replaces the clock-based controller of an in-ground system, and a hose timer sits on a faucet. The Rachio 3 and Wyze Sprinkler Controller connect to 24 V AC zone valves. Rachio supplies a 24 V AC power adapter with the Rachio 3 and states that outdoor installs need the separate Rachio 3 Weatherproof Enclosure.[^6][^2][^4]

The Rachio Smart Hose Timer is a battery-powered hose-end valve that talks Bluetooth to a Rachio Wi-Fi Hub. One hub supports up to eight valves. Rachio gives the Bluetooth range as about 200 ft without obstructions, and the hub connects only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The valve runs on two AA batteries that Rachio does not include.[^3]

Rachio describes the Rachio 3 as having no monthly fees for the app, and it notes that Heat Wave Boost and Valve Monitoring are premium features. Rachio says the controller needs strong Wi-Fi where it is installed and a smartphone to set up schedules.[^2]

Rachio states that the hose timer valve stores up to 400 run events, so scheduled watering continues if Wi-Fi drops. Schedules run by weekday or by a 1 to 21 day interval, start times can follow sunrise or sunset, and up to 19 schedules can be enabled. Rachio lists Rain Skip for the hose timer as a coming feature.[^3]

Rachio recommends 10 to 100 PSI of water pressure for the Smart Hose Timer and states that it was tested up to 200 PSI. Its flow alerts notify the owner if water runs while the faucet is off.[^3]

- Meross MST100 and MST200: battery-powered faucet timers that need a Meross hub (MSH400 or MSH450). The MST200 has two zones and works with HomeKit without HomeKit automations. The MST100 gets HomeKit voice and remote control with the MSH400 hub only.[^7][^5]
- Eve Aqua: a battery-powered hose water controller on Bluetooth LE and Thread for HomeKit. Eve says Matter is planned in a future software update, and remote control needs a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub.[^8]
- Govee Smart Water Timer: a valve controller that reports through a Govee gateway and works with Alexa and Google Assistant.[^9]
- SONOFF Hydro DUO: a two-channel Zigbee 3.0 water valve with a flow meter, powered by four AA batteries or USB-C. SONOFF lists a proximity mode that works without a gateway.[^10]

## Sprinkler controller platform support

Rachio lists Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Shortcuts, IFTTT, Alarm.com, Control4 and Nexia for its sprinkler controllers. The Rachio 3 product page names Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, Alarm.com and SmartThings. For the Smart Hose Timer, Rachio lists Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT.[^11][^2]

Rachio controllers work through the Rachio app and a Rachio account over Wi-Fi, and the Rachio 3 connects on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. The Rachio 3 connects over Wi-Fi through the maker's cloud. HomeKit support is unknown for both Rachio products.[^6][^11]

Wyze states that its controller runs its saved schedule for 14 days if the internet drops and then switches to an offline schedule.[^4]

## Flow meters and leak alerts

The Rachio EveryDrop Flow Meter measures water flow on a 1-inch supply line and reports through a Rachio controller. Rachio states that it works with the Rachio 3 and Generation 2 controllers and not with Generation 1. It gives flow data and leak alerts in the Rachio app.[^12]

The Rachio 3 has a terminal for a rain sensor and a terminal for a flow meter. The SONOFF Hydro DUO builds a flow meter into the valve instead, so it reports flow without a separate sensor.[^6][^10]
