# Home radon and air quality monitors

*What radon monitors measure, how readings are averaged, the Airthings lineup and how each model connects*

> A home radon monitor measures radon gas in pCi/L or Bq/m3, and most models add temperature and humidity. Airthings makes the monitors in this index: the Corentium Home has no wireless link, the Wave models connect over Bluetooth and SmartLink, and the View models add Wi-Fi and can act as a hub. Radon figures are shown as averages over a day, a week or longer, and Airthings states that the long-term average is the one that matters for risk.[^1][^2][^3]

## What a radon monitor measures

A radon monitor measures radon concentration in air. Airthings reports it in pCi/L and Bq/m3. The Corentium Home 2 covers 0 to 250 pCi/L (0 to 9,999 Bq/m3), and the Wave Plus, Wave Radon, View Radon and View Plus cover 0 to 500 pCi/L (0 to 20,000 Bq/m3).[^1][^4][^2]

Many radon monitors measure more than radon. The Corentium Home 2, Wave Radon and View Radon add temperature and humidity. The Wave Plus measures radon, CO2, VOCs, temperature, humidity and air pressure. The View Plus adds PM2.5 to that list for seven sensors in total.[^1][^5][^2][^4][^6]

Airthings also sells monitors without a radon sensor. The Wave Mini measures VOCs, temperature, humidity and a mold risk indicator. The Wave Enhance measures CO2, VOCs, temperature, humidity, air pressure, noise and light.[^7][^8]

## What the EPA says about radon

The EPA states that radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates, and that it is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.[^9]

The EPA page quotes the Surgeon General on a level of 4 pCi/L (150 Bq/m3) or more, at which radon should be remedied. The EPA risk tables also carry the line "Consider fixing between 2 and 4 pCi/L", which is 75 to 150 Bq/m3.[^9]

The EPA states that testing is the only way to know a home's level of exposure, because radon is invisible.[^10]

## Short-term and long-term radon readings

Continuous monitors show radon as averages over several time spans. The Corentium Home 2 display shows 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day and long-term averages, where long-term runs up to 1 year. The first 24-hour average appears after one full day of data, and the 30-day and longer views appear after the first 30 days.[^1]

Airthings ties its long-term figure to EPA guidance. For the Corentium Home 2, Airthings states that the EPA action level is based on long-term averages and that the EPA recommends measuring for at least 90 days in colder months for a reliable baseline. For the View Radon, Airthings states that the long-term average best represents the actual risk.[^1][^2]

Accuracy depends on how long a monitor has been measuring. Airthings states that the Corentium Home 2 is within 10% at 10 pCi/L over 4 days. For the Wave Plus it lists radon accuracy of about 10% after 7 days and about 5% after 2 months. The View Radon samples radon every 60 minutes.[^1][^4][^2]

Home Assistant's Airthings BLE integration exposes the same split. It provides 1-day and long-term radon averages along with radon levels for supported models.[^11]

## Airthings radon and air quality models

The index covers the Airthings home monitors listed below. Airthings lists each as a current product except where noted.[^3]

- Corentium Home: a battery-powered radon detector with a built-in display, a 0 to 500 pCi/L range and no wireless link. It runs on 3 AAA batteries, and Airthings gives a 2-year battery life.[^12][^1]
- Corentium Home 2: radon, temperature and humidity on 2 AA batteries, with Bluetooth LE and SmartLink. Airthings gives a battery life of up to 3 years.[^1]
- Wave Plus: six sensors including radon on 2 AA batteries, with Bluetooth and SmartLink. Airthings lists 16 months of battery life on Bluetooth and 18 months with a SmartLink hub.[^4]
- Wave Radon: radon, temperature and humidity over Bluetooth. Airthings does not sell it.[^5]
- View Radon: radon, temperature and humidity on a 2.9 inch ePaper display, with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and SmartLink. It runs on 6 AA batteries or USB power.[^2]
- View Plus: seven sensors including radon and PM2.5, with the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and SmartLink radios. It runs on 6 AA batteries or USB-C.[^6]

The Renew is a different product. It is a Wi-Fi air purifier with a particulate matter sensor, a HEPA-13 filter and an activated charcoal filter, and it has no radon sensor.[^13]

## How Airthings monitors connect

Airthings monitors use three kinds of connection: Bluetooth to a phone, SmartLink to a hub, and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth LE connects the Corentium Home 2 to the free Airthings app on iOS or Android, which needs Bluetooth 4.2 or later. The Wave Plus syncs only while the phone is within about 30 ft (10 m).[^1][^4]

SmartLink is a proprietary Airthings radio protocol that links a monitor to an Airthings Hub or View monitor for remote access and alerts. Airthings gives its band as 902 to 928 MHz in North America and 868 to 870 MHz in Europe. A View monitor works as the hub for Wave monitors when it is on Wi-Fi and plugged into USB power, and it is not compatible with the first-generation Wave Radon with serial 2900xxxx.[^1][^2][^6]

The View monitors use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Airthings lists Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Homey integrations for its monitors. Airthings states that HomeKit is not supported on the View Plus.[^2][^4][^6]

Home Assistant reads Airthings monitors over Bluetooth LE. Its integration supports the Wave Gen. 1, Wave Radon, Wave Mini, Wave Plus, Wave Enhance and Corentium Home 2. A device uses either Bluetooth or SmartLink and not both, so a monitor set to SmartLink has to be switched back to Bluetooth in the Airthings app first. The device has to be in range of the Home Assistant host or of a Bluetooth proxy that supports active connections.[^11]
